Do Headphones get Charged for Long Distance?

I expect everyone is well-rested and ready to win the next academy award! We only have 5 weeks left! Y'all should be able to see light at the end of the tunnel.

This week: You will be pitching your movie ideas to me and either working on your software proficiency or another assignment. Don't forget that you do not have to come to class on Wed. . .take that day to do some filming! Cameras can be checked out in the library! Also, please get your first Taskstream narratives in by Friday so I can give you feedback.

Journal #9 & 10: Use a current or past issue of L&L for journal #9. . .for journal #10 (extra credit), search L&L for an article that relates to an issue of diversity, which you can also do for #9 if you wish. . .

This week's Question:
How necessary is homework in a K-12 setting? Does a large amount of homework place some students at an advantage or disadvantage?

Homework is necessary to some extent in K-12 setting, but not too much. It is good to practice the lessons that are learned in class to see if the students can handle it on their own in homework. However, too much can stress out a child and actually make them discouraged. Creating a balance in the amount of homework assigned can be beneficial for students =]

I would say thatlarge ammounts place students at a disadvantage because they can start to feel stressed or overwhelmed. I think assignments like reading or math puzzels for the week are good and keep the student focused and let the parents know what is going on with their child.

I feel (as much as I'd hate to admit it) that homework can serve a great benefit to k-12 kids. Especially regarding subject aea where practice can play an integral part to academic success. I feel that a large amount of homework can certainly place some students at an advantage, especially in the case of individuals who may not have others who can help them with their homework. Thus a student who gets caught up on a key question/concept might be instantly placed far behind if they don't have anyone available to whom they can ask questions.

I think that homweork is a part of school, but I also think kids get way to much these days. I think weekly homework packets are effective when the parents can be informed rather than ask what do you have for h.w. they can ask to just see the packet. Everyone wins

I think some homework is necessary. I'm not a big fan of busy work because I don't really learn anything from that type of work. Homework that is engaging and seems important helps the learning process. Large amounts of homework makes students stressed out and unable to comprehend what they are learning.

Homework is needed in K-12, especially in the middle to high school grades; however, a large amount of HW is never necessary. I believe HW is important (I want to be a math teacher) because it allows students to practice on their own. Class time should be used for instruction and peer work, which can allows students to learn and help one another. One problem with homework is that students do not receive the same help at home which can put some at a disadvantage

I don't think large amounts of homework help. I believe kids K-5 shouldn't have more than 30 mins of homework because they don't have long attention spans. Really you're only going to get the best of their work in the first 20 mins or less. But I think it's good for students in 6-12. I don't think hours are nessessary but I think some homework is to keep them focused and informed of what they're learning. Homework a lot of the time is just breezed through by some in high school, many didn't seem to take in seriously in my classes. But large amounts and long hours place younger students at a disadvantage because they freak out! They start to stress because they don't understand it or don't have time to complete it. Life would just be so much easier if there was less homework and more studying!

I believe homework is important but it does not need to be in large amounts. I know homework helped me in school but a lot of it is just busy work.

Homework is necessary for retaining information, and a form of studying, but too much of a load would leave a student at a disadvantage. If too much homework is assigned, students will become less motivated and not concentrate on what is supposed to be learn- they would just merely focus on getting the assignment completed!

I think homework is important as a tool to reinforce skills and establish a good work ethic. In the K-5 years it should be limited and most projects should be done at school to avoid the "college graduate repeating fourth grade via mission-building" syndrome. I also think that homework over breaks should be limited to allow for family time and relaxation. I do think that middle and high schoolers need daily homework but teachers should be cognizant of family and life situations that might interfere with the ability to do homework. I detest "busy work" either at home or in the class!

Homework is a tool, if used properly it can be helpful if used improperly it can be frustrating and sometimes harmful. Homework does create an advantage for those who have parents who can help them. Homework it a disadvantage for those whose parents are uneducated and/or a foriegn language speaker. The amount of homework can be overwhelming and i believe that it should be measured by quality not quantity.

I think that homework is a pretty important part of a k-12 setting. I think that learning in the class and having activities during classtime is essential, but perhaps having homework gives the students a chance to put theory into practice in their own minds.

Homework is an essential tool in teaching time managment, however, there should be a healthy balance. When I was in high school I had so much homework I had to quit playing tennis in order to do well in my classes. Students should have enough homework to learn/apply on their own, but also be able to have a life outside of school.

Too much homework can preoccupy the student with getting the right answer versus getting the educational point.

I think that homework is a necessary part of school. I think that out-of class assignments are a good way to teach students responisbility and time management. However, I think that some schools and some teachers give students too much work. Students shouldn't leave a full day of school only to go home and do hours more of work. In addition, some childrens' home lives do not leave alot of time, resources, or support for doing additional school work at home.

i think a little homework can be used to reinforce ideas students learned during school, but most of the work should be done during school , and after school children should be able to play and spend time with their families.

I believe that homework is important, but as a parent of a 12 year-old son who comes home and spents a lot of time working on assignments and stays up to finish it, I think that to much homework is assigned. I think that we have to come up with a balance that enables kids to do their homework while at the same time allowing them time to go outside and enjoy themselves.

Homework is necessary in small amounts. I think students in younger grades need homework to reinforce the lessons they learned that day. Homework is important because i brings consistancy to the students school life. I think that homework should be given in small amounts so the students do not become overwhelmed. Students should also be offered a place to go to recieve help.

From a personal experience, homework its really important because it places students at an advantage. I remember when i was in high school. whenever i did homework i did well in tests, but when i didn't do any i did poorly on tests. So, by doing homework it places students at a higher level.

Learning works best with repetition, so homework is the best way to get the kids to have another repetition of the material without spending the extra class time. That means that it only accomplishes the goal if the student understands the material already, so it is the teacher’s responsibility to make sure that’s true for all the students. The way I would accomplish this is to have the kids start their homework in class and give them, and yourself, feedback on their understanding. Another way is to give them the answers with the homework so they can check themselves as they’re doing it.
Another type of homework assignment that I’ve seen is journal writing. Usually journal writing is another repetition of the material, but it is also a way to have the kids practice their English writing skills, and a way for you to get to know them better. Some kids need this extra work and some don’t. Clearly, the kids that need the practice will have an advantage if they do the homework. There’s no way to take that advantage away except to help the kids that don’t do homework at home do it some other time. This is really just another example of the fact that each kid has their own needs and the teacher needs to try very hard to meet them. Professor Heil once reminded me, I’m not going to teach high school science, I’m going to teach children.

I think some homework is good, but it would be better if parents were well informed, so the kid isn't so far behind by the time they let us know that everything seems hopeless. When I am a teacher, I plan to have a web site with everything posted in advance. If I can figure out how to make a log in, I plan to make checklist of turned in homework available to parents - plus information to help parents understand exactly what is expected from their children.
I do think homework gives certain kids advantage. Children from more educated families receive better instruction at home. Also, Children with a stay at home parent, or parent who is home from work early have more time to complete work. There's not a caotic rush at 8:30 in the evening to do homework. Although, I am a single mother. Maybe if there was a father who could help with homework why cooked dinner and wased dishes, things might be a little easier.

I think that grouping K-12 is too boad. The anwer is different for each grade level. I think that all kids can benifit from some homework. The younger the kids the less the homework. I elieve that there is not always time during class to make sure that every kid fully understands the topics. This is what HW is for, to reinforce what they learn in class. Not just to keep them busy.

Homework! It all goes back to 1980 on a report "a Nation at Risk." Some parents complain that home work disrupts their family. However, this happens to most families when a parent is unable to assist their child/children in certain subjects such as math English or any other subject. Fustration, a feeling of being overwhelm comes into play, when a parent have to argue with the child to try, insted of encouraging the child to try. On the other hand I believe homeowrk "not an excessive amount" is a great learning tool. In order for students to get better at academics, learning how to drive driving, playing basketball, football, tennis. piano, or violin(etc) they have to practice. I think this relates to learning. Good teachers encourages/help student to learn and be motivated while learning, and parents/guardians can apply the same concept when it comes to education.

I feel that homework is necessary and beneficial in a K-12 setting. Homework is an interesting topic and I think there is a fine line regarding the amount that is given. Homework should be fun (is there such a thing?:)), engaging and creative. I definitely believe that large amounts of homework can place some students at a disadvantage. For example, in my other classes I have become aware of situations where students might not have the resources needed or help at home to complete homework. There might also be other situations where students have so many other responsibilities at home making it hard to spend hours on homework each evening.

I think that some homework in necessary but I do not think it is a good idea to pile on homework at a young age. K-5 children have shorter attention spans and I think that it is harder for them to do large amounts off homework. I do think it is important though to help the children remember what they learned in class and have the opportunity to practice new ideas.

I think that homework is necessary to help students practice what they learned in class and review the subjects. However, I also believe that everything should occur in moderation and many times there is too much that is being assigned to students. I think schools should focus more on creating well rounded students. Too much homework limits the amount of activities students can participate in.

I think HW is necessary in small amounts. Most of the work should be done at school and only a small assessment should be assigned for HW. Too much HW gets students stressed and sometimes they don't even bother on trying to do it. They should have enough free time at home to spend with their family so that they go to bed early.

Yes, Homework is necessary for students at any level. It gives the students a sense of responsibility and ownership in their lives. Yes, I do feel like homework sets certain students back but I think as a whole, it's for the better.

Homework is good for young kids because it gets them into a routine, which will be helpful in high school and college. However, it can be detrimental for a child who doesn't have anyone at home who helps them with it, or makes them do it. For those children, they start each day not having done their homework, and feeling like a failure.

I think that homework is an essential part at school, specialy at K-12 grades. Through homework students can reinforce their learning and parents can realize if their children are doing good at school or not.

I think homework is a good concept, but I don't think it does what it is supposed to. If the teacher gives something that’s new or hard for the kids, then many parents might feel discouraged if they can’t help them with it. This can be especially frustrating for those who don’t speak a lot of English. Teachers need to be giving homework that the kids can do completely on their own, it should always be review.

I believe homework is very necessary for a k-12 environment. students need practice to help with assignments and understanding, I feel that an overload of homework is unnecessary and can overwhelm students. So, it is important but in t he correct amount.

Homework is very necessary when done correctly. If given in big bulks, I think that students just get overwhelmed but when given the proper amounts, it does increase the students' knowledge of different topics. Some children come home with so much after school work that they have no time for extracurricular activities. Homework also needs to be able to be done on their own, or else it is harder for children with working parents to accomplish the same work as those with stay at home parents.

Homework is necessary for students; however, we need to give sertain amount of homework to students depending on their grade level and not give them too much or they can then get discouraged of school.

I feel that homework is necessary to a certain extent. I think that you need to practice in order to benefit in academics but, some teachers make it too much for the students to handle. Homework sometimes makes students end up hating school because it drives them crazy.

Homework is definitely required in all grades, but it shouldn't be too challenging. I hope teachers do take into consideration that students don't always have control of what their home environment is going to be on certain days, or what activities their parent may have planned for them. I think atleast reading assignments should be continously assigned.

I think homework is important. It is an opportunity to reinforce what was talked about in class. It can be a different activity than in class. The students mind set and environment will be different. As well as it gives the teacher a perspective of comprehension among the student. I do agree that the homework needs to be reasonable in amount. Being a child is not all about school but growing up too. Often homework can be related to daily life. Such as a writing about an event that they had at home. Or doing an experiment with household items and writing a short reflection it....
